Surgeons have been able to operate successfully on the eyes since the 1950s, when Jose Barraquer, a Spanish ophthalmologist, developed the microkeratome. Eye surgeons used this device to cut away portions of the cornea. In the late 1980′s, an Iranian doctor living in the United States patented the LASIK procedure. This method of eye surgery augmented the original procedure with an excimer laser.

The Procedure

Prior to the procedure, patients have to stop wearing contact lenses. The type of lens and the doctor’s instructions will determine just how long patients will have to go without contact lenses. It is not uncommon for a doctor to ask a patient to go a few weeks without his or her lenses.

Just before the surgery begins, the medical team will give the patient anesthetic drops which he or she must self-administer. Then the team uses a special machine to make a topographical map of the patient’s eye. The patient may request a mild sedative if he or she becomes nervous.

The eye must not move significantly during surgery. The medical team will restrain the eye’s mobility by attaching a corneal suction ring. Sometimes this device can cause bleeding but it is not serious and heals on its own a few days later.

With the eye immobilized, the surgeon begins to work. With either the microkeratome or a laser, the surgeon creates a flap with the cornea, cutting most of it but leaving a hinge at one end. The surgeon will them fold the flap back.

With the middle cornea exposed, the surgeon cuts away extraneous tissue and remodels the inner eye. The laser leaves little debris and does no harm to surrounding tissue. During this brief period of time, the patient’s vision will become blurry.

After checking to make sure that no debris or air bubbles are in the eye, the surgeon closes the flap. The entire process of laser eye surgery takes no more than a few minutes from the creation of the flap to its closing. The patient can expect improved vision within weeks.
